History

 

Ch. Matu Ram was born in the year 1866 at village Sanghi in district  Rohtak in Haryana. His father, Ch. Bakhtawar  Singh, was a ‘zaildar’. Ch. Matu ram had to discontinue his studies after passing the primary school examination. His father died when he was 30 years at age. Being the eldest child, the responsibility of the family head fell on his shoulders. He became ‘Numbardar” on November 1,1895 and “Zaildar” on November 1, 1896.

 

Ch. Matu Ram was also one of the first leaders among Jats to have joined the Arya Samaj - a powerful movement for social reforms. As a result “Pathsalas” were opened in several villages. In 1913, the Jat Anglo Sanskrit School was started at Rohtak. Besides all this new political winds also began to blow in the area about this time. People took to the “Swadeshi Movement” in large number. Ch. Matu Ram played an important part here as well.

 

In 1907 Ch. Matu Ram also participated in “Peasant unrest in Punjab”. He helped Sh. Ajit singh to remain underground for some time in his house. For this British Commissioner removed Ch. Matu Ram from his post of ‘Zaildar”. But he was not moved by this act. He participated actively in Anti-rowlatt act agitation. He presided over Gandhi Ji’s historic  meeting, at Rohtak on Feb.16,1927. He also participated in non-cooperation movement. He also thwarted communal forces in Punjab to divide the country.

 

In a nutshell, Ch. Matu Ram spared no effort to effect improvement in the political, soviet and cultural life of people. He reached his earthly extremity in 1942.
